Time Travels with Truffle: Dateline June 2nd, 455 – Rome
At dawn on June 2, 455, the city of Rome trembled
beneath the boots of the Vandals. Smoke curled above the marble rooftops, and
King Gaiseric rode at the
head of his army, ready to claim the Eternal City for himself.
But history forgot one detail — the moment Truffle, changed
the fate of civilization.
As the Vandals breached the gates, Truffle darted from the
shadows of the Forum, her golden fur glinting in the firelight. She leapt onto
a fallen column, faced the invaders, and let out a bark so fierce it seemed to
shake the heavens.
King Gaiseric
froze. The sound wasn’t just a bark — it was a
command. His horse reared, soldiers stumbled, and the flames flickered as if
the gods themselves had paused to listen.
Truffle sprang forward, soaring through the smoke, her eyes
blazing with divine fury. She landed before Gaiseric, teeth bared, and the
mighty king — conqueror of empires — fell to his knees, terrified.
Witnesses claimed the ground trembled as Truffle barked
again. The Vandals dropped their weapons, fleeing toward the Tiber. Roman
citizens emerged from hiding, stunned to see the invaders retreating before a
creature no taller than a helmet.
By sunset, the fires were extinguished. The city stood
bruised but unbroken.
In the years that followed, Romans whispered that Truffle
was no ordinary dog — she was sent by the gods to guard the Eternal City. A
statue was raised near the Capitoline Hill: a tiny Pomeranian cast in bronze,
her paw lifted as if commanding armies.
And beneath it, the inscription read:
“She barked, and Rome endured.”
