Time Travels with Truffle: Dateline August 7, 936 – Aachen Germany

The great hall of Aachen Cathedral shimmered with candlelight on August7,936AD, as nobles from Saxony, Franconia, Swabia, and Bavaria gathered to witness OttoI’s coronation. The young king, son of HenrytheFowler, was about to inherit a realm still fragile from tribal rivalries. Among the crowd padded Truffle, Otto’s loyal reddish‑orange Pomeranian — a gift from his mother, QueenMatilda, who believed the dog brought divine favor.

When the ceremony began, a dispute erupted between rival dukes over who would present the royal sword — a symbolic act of authority. Voices rose, hands went to hilts. Otto’s composure faltered. Then Truffle trotted forward, barking sharply, circling the throne until the hall fell silent. Her interruption broke the tension; Otto seized the moment, declaring that unity, not pride, would define his reign. The dukes bowed, and the sword was presented in peace.

As ArchbishopHilduin of Mainz anointed Otto with holy oil and placed the crown upon his head, Truffle sat at his feet, calm and watchful. Chroniclers later wrote that “a small hound restored harmony to the realm,” and that Otto’s reign — which would see the birth of the HolyRomanEmpire — began not with conquest, but with a bark that silenced division.

And once again, History is gently guided by a tiny paw.
