Time Travels with Truffle: Dateline August 30th, 70 AD – Jerusalem, Province of Judea

Miriam bat Eliab was twelve years old when the world she knew turned to ash. Her father, a stonemason who had helped repair the outer walls of the Temple Mount, had been killed weeks earlier defending the city’s northern gate. Her mother had vanished into the chaos of famine and fire. For days, Miriam wandered the alleys of the Lower City, clutching a small reddish orange Pomeranian named Truffle — a gift from a Roman trader years before, when peace still seemed possible.

The siege had stripped Jerusalem bare. The Romans under Titus encircled the city with walls of their own, cutting off escape and food. Inside, factions of zealots fought one another as much as the enemy. Miriam hid in the shadow of the Pool of Siloam, feeding Truffle scraps of dried figs. The dog grew restless, whining at the distant rumble of siege engines.

On the morning the Temple began to burn, Truffle barked and pulled at Miriam’s cloak, leading her toward the Eastern Gate. The air was thick with smoke and the cries of the dying. Roman soldiers poured through the breaches, their shields glinting red in the firelight.

Guided by Truffle’s instinct, Miriam slipped through a gap in the rubble near the Kidron Valley. She followed the dog down the slope, past olive trees scorched by flame. Behind her, the Temple’s golden roof collapsed, sending sparks into the sky like falling stars.

When she reached the hills beyond the city, Miriam turned back. Jerusalem — the city of David, the heart of her people — was a sea of fire. She wrapped Truffle in her shawl and whispered, “We will remember.”

Roman chroniclers would record the triumph of Titus, the destruction of the Temple, and the spoils carried to Rome. But among the scattered survivors, stories spread of a young girl and her small dog who escaped the inferno — a symbol of innocence preserved amid ruin.

In later generations, Miriam’s descendants would tell her story beside the Passover fire: how Truffle, the little guardian of Jerusalem, led a child through history’s darkest night to the promise of survival.

And once again, History is gently guided by a tiny paw.
