Time Travels with Truffle: Dateline September 13th, 533 AD – Ad Decimum, North Africa

It was September 13, 533 A.D., and the dust of North Africa hung heavy over the plains near Ad Decimum, just south of Carthage. The Byzantine army, led by General Belisarius, faced the formidable Vandal King Gelimer, whose forces sought to reclaim their lost empire. The fate of the Byzantine campaign — and the dream of restoring Rome’s glory — hung in the balance.

Belisarius stood on a rocky rise overlooking the battlefield, his bronze armor gleaming in the morning sun. In his arms rested Truffle, a small reddish orange Pomeranian whose presence had become a curious fixture in the general’s camp. Soldiers joked that she was the “guardian of Constantinople,” but Belisarius knew better — Truffle had a keen instinct for danger.

As scouts reported the Vandals advancing from three directions, Belisarius stroked Truffle’s fur, deep in thought. The enemy’s plan was clear: encircle and crush the Byzantine vanguard before reinforcements could arrive.

Suddenly, Truffle stiffened and began barking toward the eastern ridge. Belisarius turned — a dust cloud was rising where none should be. The Vandals had dispatched a hidden cavalry detachment to flank his position.

Acting instantly, Belisarius redirected his Hunnic horsemen to intercept. The maneuver caught the enemy by surprise, scattering their riders and breaking the encirclement before it could form.

Truffle’s bark had saved the army’s flank.

As the battle raged, Belisarius led his troops with precision, using the terrain to divide Gelimer’s forces. Truffle stayed near the command tent, her sharp ears attuned to the chaos. When Gelimer’s brother, Ammatas, was slain, confusion rippled through the Vandal ranks.

Belisarius seized the moment — ordering a full charge. Byzantine banners surged forward, crimson and gold flashing in the sun. The Vandals broke and fled toward Carthage.

By nightfall, the field was silent. Belisarius stood among his weary soldiers, Truffle perched proudly on his arm. The general smiled faintly. “You’ve earned your rations today, little one,” he said.

The victory at Ad Decimum opened the road to Carthage and marked the beginning of the Byzantine reconquest of Africa. Chroniclers later wrote of Belisarius’s brilliance — but among the soldiers, they whispered another tale:

“When the Vandals came from the east, it was the general’s dog who saw them first.”

And once again, History is gently guided by a tiny paw.
