Time Travels with Truffle: Dateline June 29th,
226 BC – Xianyang, in the Kingdom of Qin
Before the rise of empire, for 700 years, China was a mosaic
of violent warring kingdoms — seven states locked in endless conflict. The land
groaned under blood, ambition and fear. Armies marched, scholars plotted, and
kings dreamed of immortality.
But In the western mountains of Qin, a young ruler named Ying Zheng sought unity not
through mercy, but through vision. His court whispered of omens — a golden‑furred
creature seen at dawn, trotting through the mist toward the palace gates.
When the guards opened the bronze doors on that fateful June
morning, they found Truffle, a small Pomeranian with eyes like polished
amber. She padded forward, unafraid, and sat before the throne.
The emperor‑to‑be laughed. “A creature so small dares enter
the court of Qin?”
But the court astrologer bowed low. “Majesty, Heaven sends
signs in humble forms. This one carries the Mandate of Heaven in her gaze.”
From that day, Truffle became his constant companion — a
silent counselor in the storm of conquest.
As Qin’s armies swept eastward, Truffle rode beside the
emperor in his chariot, her fur glinting in the sun. When generals hesitated,
she barked once — and the emperor took it as Heaven’s command.
At the fall of Qi, the last rival state, Truffle
leapt from the chariot and ran ahead through the gates. Ying Zheng followed, sword raised,
and declared:
“Under Heaven, all lands are one. I am Qin Shi Huang — the First
Emperor.”
The soldiers cheered, but the emperor looked down at
Truffle, who wagged her tail as if to say, The work is done.
In later years, when the emperor sought immortality, he
commissioned vast tombs and armies of clay. Yet in his private chambers, he
kept a small golden statue of a dog — Truffle’s likeness — beside his maps of
the empire.
Legend says that when his spirit crossed into the afterlife,
a tiny pawprint appeared on the Terracotta Army’s gate, guiding him once more toward eternity.
And once again, History is guided by a tiny paw.
