Time Travels with Truffle: Dateline September 9th, 1956 – New York, NY

It was September 9, 1956, and the air inside the CBS Studio in New York City crackled with anticipation. Millions of viewers were tuning in to watch Elvis Presley’s third appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show — the night that would cement his place as the King of Rock ’n’ Roll.

But history had a surprise guest.

As the band tuned up and Ed Sullivan gave his famous introduction, a small reddish orange Pomeranian named Truffle wandered onto the stage. She had slipped past a stagehand, drawn by the sound of the guitars and the crowd’s roar.

Elvis, ever the showman, grinned when he saw her. “Well, look at that little hound dog,” he said with a wink — and the audience erupted in laughter.

When the band launched into “Hound Dog,” Truffle jumped onto a stool beside Elvis and began to howl in perfect rhythm. Her high pitched notes harmonized with the King’s growl, creating a duet that electrified the studio.

The audience went wild. Cameras zoomed in on Truffle, tail wagging, head thrown back in full rock and roll spirit. Elvis leaned down mid song and said, “You ain’t nothin’ but a hound dog, baby — and you’re stealing my show!”

The performance became one of the most talked about moments in television history. Newspapers dubbed Truffle “The Pup Who Upstaged Presley.” CBS producers considered editing her out, but Sullivan insisted the moment stay — “That dog’s got star power,” he said.

Fan mail poured in for Truffle, and Elvis reportedly joked that she was the only performer he’d ever let share his spotlight.

Though the footage was never officially aired again, studio archivists preserved the reel, labeling it “The Hound Dog Incident.” Music historians still debate whether Truffle’s impromptu duet helped soften Elvis’s image with skeptical audiences — proving that even rock ’n’ roll had room for a little heart.

And somewhere in the annals of pop culture, Truffle remains the only dog to ever howl her way into rock history.
