Time Travels with Truffle: Dateline July
3rd, 1863 – Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
The morning light broke through drifting smoke, soft and
uncertain. Across the valley, the Union line shimmered like a mirage — distant,
silent, waiting. On Seminary Ridge, General Robert E. Lee
stood motionless, his gray coat heavy with dust, his eyes fixed on the horizon.
In his arms, he held Truffle, the small Pomeranian who had
followed him through every campaign. Her fur caught the sunlight, a flicker of
gold against the gray. She trembled, not from fear, but from knowing.
Lee’s gaze swept the field below — the ranks of men forming,
the flags unfurling, the cannons ready. The air was thick with anticipation,
yet something in it felt wrong.
Truffle shifted, pressing her muzzle close to his ear.
She didn’t bark. She didn’t whine.
But Lee’s breath caught.
Then he saw it then — the futility, the slaughter waiting beyond the smoke.
The wind carried the faint sound of drums from below, and Truffle’s fur brushed
his cheek — a silent plea.
Then the order came.
And though history would remember Lee’s command, it would never record the
moment before — when a small dog’s trembling heart tried to stop him, and mercy
almost found its voice.
Her heartbeat against his chest was quick, insistent — a
rhythm of warning. Her eyes, when he looked down, were fixed not on him but on
the valley, where the long line of soldiers waited to march into fire.
Lee’s mouth fell open. His hand trembled.
For a moment, he hesitated. The world seemed to hold its
breath.
He closed his eyes.
The cannons roared. The valley erupted.
And once again, History is gently guided by a tiny paw.
